Fat-Melting Injections May Not Be Safe

The Food and Drug Administration has put out a strong statement about a widely-used type of cosmetic procedure called Lipodissolve which is often used as an alternative to true liposuction. These “fat melting” injections are often offered in medical spas and are regularly advertised as being able to dissolve or destroy small deposits of fat in the arms, legs and even midsection.

Lippodissolve may not be safe. The FDA sent out warning letters to at least five medical spas for using unapproved drugs that have not been scientifically proven to be safe or actually “melt” fat as they are advertised. None of the medical spas were in New York or New Jersey, though the Monarch MedSpa of King of Prussia, PA and the Medical Cosmetic Enhancements medical spa of Chevy Chase, MD are close enough to have New Jersey and New York clients. The drugs in question are usually a mix different chemicals including PC (phosphatidylcholine), DC (sodium dioxycholate) and even Infasurf, a breathing medication used with premature infants.

The FDA has been under increased pressure to begin cracking down on medical spas and their various claims and advertisements for products and procedures that seem to good to be true. In this case the idea of using a simple chemical injection to melt away fat in the body was advertised as safe and without side effects, though the Food and Drug Administration has reports that there may be complications with the procedure.

In addition to warning various medical spas across the United States, the FDA also warned against buying lipodissolve products from the zipmed.net and mesoone.com websites.

Remember: a board certified plastic surgeon has many years of schooling and formalized medical training. Don’t trust your body to someone who isn’t qualified and if a claim about a miracle beauty drug sounds too good to be true it probably is.

How To Pay For Plastic Surgery

How To Pay For Plastic Surgery

Most people are surprised when they first find out about the expensive cost of most plastic surgical procedures. A typical plastic surgeon will change anywhere from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands of dollars for a single surgery, depending upon the complexity of the operation. Counted in those high costs are not only the plastic surgeon’s costs, but also the costs of the anesthesiologist, operating room facilities and accommodations for recovery.

The average kind of elective plastic surgery patient only makes about $50,000 a year. As you may know most optional cosmetic surgeries are not covered by any sort of health insurance, leaving most patients to pay the bill another way. Cosmetic surgery is not exclusively for the wealthy. Here are several different ways you can pay for your plastic surgery:

Personal Loan: You could outright borrow the money from a bank or other lending institution without any sort of collateral such as a home or car. There are lots of reputable internet loan agencies that can offer often offer you lower interest rates than a bank because they have less overhead. Some loan agencies specialize in medical or smaller loans for minor elective surgeries. The approval process for these types of loans can be a few hours to a few weeks.

Home Equity Loan: If you own your home and it is worth more than you owe the bank, then you could borrow some money against your home to pay for your plastic surgery. Most home equity loans don’t have restrictions on how the loaned money is used and the money you pay in interest may even be tax deductible.

Credit Card: Yes, some people put their entire plastic surgery bill on their credit card and pay it off over time. Generally the interest rates will be high, but you could get special incentive points and bonuses from the credit card company for spending that much money at once.

Plastic Surgery Financing: There are companies that actually specialize in giving out loans that are intended to be used for plastic and cosmetic surgeries. These loans are generally lower interest rates than many other loans and many plastic surgeons prefer using them when possible. Some plastic surgeons now work with financing companies or even offer their own financing services.

LendingClub is a peer-to-peer service that offers personal loan rates that are much lower than a bank. You can create a free account to learn more!

Personal Networking Loan: Peer-to-peer loan programs allow hundreds of people to loan you very small amounts of money at a relatively low pay back rate. There are many web based peer-to-peer loan sites that will loan you money as long as your credit rating is not too bad. This is one of newest ways of borrowing money.

Save it Up: Yes, you can save up the money, but it could take a long time, depending upon the cost and the amount of money you are able to put away. By the time you save up enough for the procedure you want the cost may have risen! Many people have a difficult time saving up enough money to pay for a specific plastic surgery procedure.

The idea of taking out a loan for something like plastic surgery tends to scare some people, but you have to consider plastic surgery as an investment in your health, both physical and mental as well as an investment in your career, relationships and quality of life. It is a high cost to pay, but the rewards of a successful cosmetic surgery often outweight the costs.

The Truly Unique Gift: A Plastic Surgery Gift Certificate

No matter what the occasion, if you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind gift idea for that special person you may want to consider getting him or her a gift certificate to a plastic surgeon! Taking a cue from travel agents where gift cards for luxury vacations are a popular idea, many plastic surgeons now offer gift certificates for their services which can be purchased by friends and relatives of the perspective patient.

Give the gift of beauty with a plastic surgeon gift card or gift certificate! Most plastic surgeons will sell you a gift certificate or gift card for as little as $25. Some plastic surgery centers have fancy gift cards with logos and photos embossed on them while some simply offer plain gift certificates which you can present to the recipient in a classy card or envelope. Of course most medical spas which combine the services of a spa with that of a plastic surgeon’s office will offer gift cards that can be used for everything from getting your nails done, to a full derma smooth or Botox procedure!

Obviously, you’ll want to do your homework before you just run out and buy a gift card from any plastic surgeon. First, be sure that your recipient is serious about getting plastic surgery and has really done his or her homework. Giving a plastic surgery gift card out of the blue can obviously be taken the wrong way! You should talk to your recipient to find out which plastic surgeon he or she is currently working with and be sure that’s the surgeon’s office that will be performing the cosmetic surgery. In addition to the doctor you’ll also want to be sure your recipient is healthy enough and interested enough to go through with the procedure.

You most likely won’t be able to exchange or get a refund on your gift certificate once it’s purchased. You may even want to find out the approximate cost of the procedure that he or she is interested in. You may have some friends who can also chip or purchase gift cards to help offset the cost.

So consider giving the gift of beauty and confidence with a cosmetic surgery gift card! The gift of plastic surgery is not something to be taken lightly, but it could prove to be the gift that dramatically improves someone’s outlook on life and because each cosmetic surgery procedure on each individual is unique, you’ll never find a gift that’s as “one-of-a-kind” as a gift card to a plastic surgeon!

Are Medical Spas Safe and Legal for Plastic Surgery?

With the advent of more and more “medical spas” or “medspas” over the past several years plastic surgery has become something that is not always limited to a doctor’s office or hospital. Medical spas are essentially combining two different businesses: day spas and minor outpatient surgery centers. While there’s no real definition of what constitutes a medical spa and what doesn’t, most medical spas can be identified as being a business which offers a large variety of spa treatments such as facials, massages and mud wraps with a mix of mostly non-invasive cosmetic surgery procedures including skin abrasion, derma smooth, laser hair removal and even some types of liposuction.

Medical spas are legal in New Jersey. Are medical spas performing plastic surgery legally?

The initial concept of joining traditional spa services with cosmetic surgery procedures under one roof is believed to have started nearly ten years ago. The International Spa Association reports that there are now over 1,800 medical spas in the United States, which is an amazing 84% increase from July 2007 through December 2008. And while most medical spas bill themselves as being clean and safe, there has been very little close study of the safety or even legality of the practice.

The September death of 37-year-old Mrs. Kah-Orukotan in the Florida Weston Medspa brought some of these safety and training issues to light. There are some charges that the type of operation Mrs. Kah-Orukotan was undergoing was not strictly allowed to be performed in a non-medical facilities. The investigation is still ongoing. Now lawmakers in several states, including New York, Massachusetts, Florida and Utah are now considering laws to formal define a medical spa and to begin regulating what they can and can’t do. New Jersey, which has the nation’s only plastic surgery tax (or “Botax”), may be the inspiration for a measure in some of the upcoming healthcare bills that would create a tax on cosmetic surgery procedures performed at medical spas.

Are medical spas safe for plastic surgery?

The medical spas themselves point out the fact that they have paid medical doctors on staff and that the vast majority of their patients have a safe and effective cosmetic surgery experience. Critics point out that some of those doctors actually started out in one field and moved into performing plastic surgery procedures for a number of different reasons. Some of the doctors may not have all the training and experience that established board certified plastic surgeons usually have.

Working at a medical spa can be attractive to a doctor for several reasons. First, it can add variety to a doctor’s normal routine of seeing the same patients with the same ailments week in and week out. Second, many doctors report that working in a medical spa is a more rewarding and less stressful experience than working in a busy practice or hospital. Third, working in a medical spa often requires less time filling out insurance paperwork for doctors because the business is largely paid for with “out of pocket” money from patients which completely avoids the numerous medical insurance claims and beauracracy that’s often found in a regular doctor’s office.

This payment system is also a big reason why medical spas are becoming so popular among their clinetele. Some medical spas offer the ability to just walk in off the street and receive a variety of spa treatments and surgical procedures, sometimes all in the same day. This convenience and immediacy appeals the baby boomers who want plastic surgery but don’t want to deal with the usual procedure of dealing with a busy doctor’s office.

The prices of many of the plastic surgery procedures at medical spas can also be quite attractive. Many medical spas take advantage of the latest technology and some staff members require less training than in a traditional doctor’s office. These efficiencies and cost savings are often reflected in their prices.

The safety of medical spas for plastic surgery procedures is still a hotly debated topic. It’s buyer beware when you’re choosing a plastic surgeon or picking a medical spa, so you’ll probably want to do your homework. You should probably check references if possible, make sure the medical spa and surgical areas are clean and well maintained. Just as when you’re looking for a cosmetic surgeon, you’ll want to investigate the experience of the doctors as well as any complaints there may be against the doctor or medical spa in question.

For some people the convenience and attractive price may be too much to pass up, while for others the more traditional method of having plastic surgery in a doctor’s office or hospital may be much more comforting. It’s ultimately a personal decision to have any sort of cosmetic surgery done in at a medical spa.

New Jersey Plastic Surgeons Use Advanced Liposuction Techniques

This isn’t your mother’s liposuction!

Liposuction, the popular plastic surgery procedure which removes fat and cellulite build up from under the skin of various parts of the bodies is starting to have a make-over of it’s own and one New Jersey plastic surgeon is leading the way.

NJ Plastic Surgeons are offering new liposuction proceduresStandard “tumescent” liposuction breaks up body fat with an injected sterile saline solution and a cannula (liposuction wand) is used to literally suck out the excess and broken down fat. After suction the cannula is removed and the incision is closed, allowing the body to begin healing. While the standard practice of saline liposuction is a fairly advanced surgical procedure in itself, there are some plastic surgeons who are now employing even more advanced techniques to this already modern surgery.

Board-certified New Jersey plastic surgeons like Dr. Richard D’Amico and Dr. William K. Boss are some of those surgeons who are on the cutting edge of cosmetic surgery procedures. Some NJ plastic surgeons are now using lasers, ultrasonic and even radio waves to perform liposuction surgeries in place of the normal sterile saline.

Each new form of liposuction breaks up the fat under the skin and separates it from the muscle so that it can be sucked out. These new types of liposuction offer some advantages over the standard ways.

Ultrasound Assisted Liposuction (UAL) – In this cosmetic surgery procedure a saline solution is used to break up the fat under the skin but then a cannula which transmits ultrasonic energy is used to practically liquefy the excess fat deposits, which makes it easier to suck out of the body. There is even a procedure now which calls for ultrasonic energy to be applied externally that allows the body to handle the dissolved fat without the need for sutures or an incision.

Laser Liposuction – Like the other forms of liposuction, this procedure first requires the fat in the body to be broken down, but instead of using a saline solution a laser or ultrasonic heat energy from a tiny instrument is used to essentially melt away the fat. The procedure requires no sutures, leaves a very small scar, requires only local anesthesia and usually involves a minimal amount of bleeding. Recovery periods are often much less than traditional liposuction techniques.

Radiofrequency Assisted Liposuction (RFAL) – This technique uses radiofrequency energy to melt away the fat under the skin by using an external and internal probe to apply a uniform heat which can melt away fat molecules. The procedure is reported more comfortable than some others and shows promise as being a less painful alternative to some other forms of liposuction.

While there are many plastic surgeons in New Jersey who can perform liposuction, you’ll want to be sure that the plastic surgeon you work with is well-versed in the traditional as well as more advanced types of liposuction. Lipo is one of the more common cosmetic surgery procedures performed in the United States and it’s getting easier and less dangerous as new technology emerges.

How Healthcare Reform May Affect Plastic Surgery

Pundits are calling it the “Botax” but the reality of electric plastic surgery procedures being taxed in New Jersey may soon become a nationwide idea. Congress is looking into the tax on cosmetic surgeries, which is said to be a $12 billion industry, as a way to help pay for the healthcare overhaul. Elective cosmetic surgeries might be taxed, while it’s unlikely that medically necessary or less elective surgeries would fall into the same category. Supporters of the plan say that these elective plastic surgery taxes could help pay for the life and death medical treatments of others while critics of the plan aren’t sure if the tax revenue would be worthwhile.

Healthcare reform may tax the services of plastic surgeons doing elective procedures. There’s no word on exactly how much the tax would be, but numbers from 5% to 10% have been thrown around as possibilities. Some members of congress have suggested that the tax on elective cosmetic surgeries would essentially amount to nothing more than a “luxury” tax on expensive procedures, though critics argue that it is “normal” people of modest means who often save up to pay for the majority of the plastic surgery procedures done in the United States.

Critics of the idea, such as the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, argue that it’s unfair to tax some fields of business more than others. One plastic surgeon who is against the proposal has stated that his average patient is a middle class woman between the ages 19-64 who makes about $50,000 a year. Fueling the argument against implementing a plastic surgery tax is the one state that actually already has a tax in place: New Jersey.

New Jersey implemented a 6% tax on most elective cosmetic surgeries in 2004 and it has not raised as much money as initially hoped. The unpopular New Jersey cosmetic surgery tax has been close to being overturned several times, but has always remained law by several close votes.

There is yet no word on what would happen to the New Jersey plastic surgery tax if a national plastic surgery taxation plan was put into place. Other states are also looking at New Jersey’s plastic surgery tax model and considering implementing the same tax, even if the tax does not become nationwide.

A Common Plastic Surgery Procedure Could Help Relieve Migraines

The 36 million Americans who suffer from regular migraines may have a new friend in a common plastic surgery procedure that’s reported to be helpful in alleviating the powerful headaches. Surprisingly, this new treatments comes from a common cosmetic surgery procedure that’s usually only considered for beautification purposes.

Plastic Surgeons might be able to relieve migraines with a surgery similar to a forehead lift to loosen muscles. It turns out that the elective surgery of a “forehead lift” may really be a good way to almost completely eliminate migraines from people who regularly suffer from them. A forehead lift consists of smoothing out the skin on the forehead to make wrinkles disappear. To do this muscles around the temple and forhead often have to be slightly shifted or moved to smooth out the forehead. During the cosmetic surgery it is thought that perhaps the muscles around the forehead that are thought to be responsible for the migraines are loosened and deactivated, which almost completely eliminates migraines completely.

A study published in the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery reported that 57 percent of patients who received the forehead lift surgery reported a a complete ceasation of migraine headaches one year after undergoing the procedure. And even if the headaches weren’t completely eliminated, 83% reported a partial improvement in relief from migraine headaches. The procedure studied was designed specifically for migraine relief and was slightly different from a traditional forehead lift that is performed for strictly cosmetic reasons.

For years there have been unscientific studies and anecdotes about Botox injections in the forehead behind used to prevent migraine headaches. The problem with Botox is that it’s not a permanent solutions and migraines were returning to most patients within three or four months. The few migraine sufferers who have undergone forehead lift surgery, however, largely report a lessening of migraine symptoms and recurrences. Just as with Botox, some migraine victims who happened to have a forehead lift later reported have many fewer migraine headaches after the procedure was done.

This forehead lift procedure designed for eliminating migraines is still a fairly new process and the initial study was one a relatively small group of people. It may be years before the process is perfected and widely offered if it ever is fully adopted by most plastic surgeons. The study also had a rather high placebo success rate, which indicates that the high success rate may not be completely due to the surgery alone. There are plenty of plastic surgeons in New York and New Jersey who are currently performing forehead lifts for cosmetic reasons but we’re not yet aware of any aiming to reduce migraine headaches with them.

Many Baby Boomers Going Under the Knife for Plastic Surgery

More mature men and women are actually helping to raise up the number of cosmetic surgeries performed every year. The population of the United States is getting older but unlike earlier generations, this generation has placed a much higher value on physical beauty. The Baby Boomer population is defined as the children born after World War II from the years 1946 to 1964. As the Baby Boomers get older many are trying to hold on to their youthful looks more than ever.

More Baby Boomers are opting for plastic surgery. There are lots of different causes behind the increase in the acceptance of plastic surgery. Reality cosmetic surgeon television shows compete with dramatic shows featuring good-looking plastic surgeons helping all sorts of equally sexy people. Plastic surgery is more accepted now. Lots of people are saying in the work force longer than they used to and those more mature people want to look as good as their more youthful office mates and co-workers. In fact, some studies have shown that better looking people actually make more money than their less attractive co-workers.

This Baby Boomer generation is also the first group of people to grow up with a real emphasis on healthy living. They have a healthy eating regimen, they workout on a daily basis and they want to look as youthful as they still feel. Cosmetic surgery can make a person’s exterior body look as good as they may feel internally. While many young people turn to cosmetic surgery to attract a mate many older people use plastic surgery to simply look younger by a few years and improve their self-esteem.

Skin and surface procedures such as laser facial peels, Botox injections, and wrinkle filling procedures are often the first cosmetic surgical procedures tried. Lots of the more commonly performed procedures are meant to improve the skin, especially after decades of growing up without sun block. The most common plastic surgery request by far is the application of Botox to smooth out wrinkly skin.

Men usually opt for cosmetic procedures such as eyelid lifts, face smoothing and other operations that make them look more youthful at the office. It is not just women who are seeing the local cosmetic surgeon. Most people think of cosmetic surgery as something that appeals more to women, but that’s not always the case. It’s true that a lot of older women are opting so-called “mommy make-overs” which usually consists of breast augmentation, a breast raising and a tummy tuck.

Plastic surgery is not just for the young anymore – it’s now a valid way for Baby Boomers to keep feeling young and healthy. As more older people continue to seek ways to look and feel younger there will be more plastic surgeons there to serve them. The growing Baby Boomer population is more health conscious and more interested hanging on to their natural health for as long as possible.

New Jersey Plastic Surgeon Tells Patients to Stop Smoking

Some plastic surgeons are beginning to refuse to work with patients who aren’t willing to give up their smoking habit before and after their cosmetic surgery procedure.  Dr. Vincent Giampapa, a board-certified plastic surgeon from Montclair, NJ recently told his patient Lisa Morrison who wanted a neck and eye lift to stop smoking before having her cosmetic surgery.

Smoking is not good before or after plastic surgery. This ban on smoking isn’t just limited to New Jersey plastic surgeons.  Plastic and cosmetic surgeons from around the country are starting to tell their patients that they must quit smoking for at least several weeks before and after most elective cosmetic surgeries. Patients who undergo plastic surgery often don’t think of smoking as being anymore harmful than any other activity, but there are now several studies that show how much smoking can adversely affect healing and recovery from any sort of surgery, including cosmetic surgery.

What does smoking do to your body when it’s recovering from plastic surgery?
People who smoke regularly or who are subjected to second-hand smoke on a regular basis are generally less healthy than their non-smoking peers even before surgery.  Years of smoking can permanently constrict blood vessels (a condition called  “vasoconstriction”) which makes healing a harder process and may contribute to smokers statistically having a higher rate of infection and respiratory complications due to anesthesia.

Smoking before or after plastic surgery leaves patients at risk for many healing problems, including increased change of infection, longer bruising times, possible scarring, sagging and even persistent pulmonary problems.  A large part of those complications are due to the way smoking restricts blood flow and oxygen to parts of the body that may need it the most – the parts that need to heal from the surgery.

Many plastic surgeons are also choosing the procedures they before on patients based on whether or not their patients are smokers.  The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) reports that most plastic surgeons do not perform procedures involving skin flaps or skin separation on smokers because of the increased health risks and healing problems associated with smoking.

Plastic surgeons, such as New Jersey plastic surgeon Vincent Giampapa not only have their patients” health in mind, but also their own reputation.  It isn’t a good advertisement for their services if one of their patients is healing slowly, scarring or generally not feeling well for a long time after surgery.

Plastic surgery patients are walking advertisements for their doctors and word of mouth is one of the best ways to find a plastic surgeon in New Jersey or anywhere else.

New Jersey and New York Plastic Surgeons Feeling Economic Pain

New Jersey and New York Plastic Surgeons Feeling Economic Pain

The next time your plastic surgeon gives you a concerned look he may not be thinking about you: he may be worried about paying his bills. New Jersey is a large state that is populated with a lot of plastic surgeons and it right next door to New York City, the home of Wall Street and center of the economic crisis, so it’s no surprise that this economic downturn is hitting most NJ plastic surgeons especially hard.

Plastic surgeons in NYC and NJ are not making as much money as they once were.In the United States the bulk of the plastic and cosmetic surgeries performed are elective surgeries such as breast augmentation, rhinoplasty, tummy tucks and other cosmetic changes that aren’t necessarily vital to one’s physical health or well-being.  These surgical procedures are obviously expensive, though the cost of most plastic surgery procedures in New Jersey is relatively inline with the rest of the United States.

These elective surgeries are considered to be somewhat of a luxury, and even a sort of status symbol, just in the way expensive cars, watches and clothing can be.  In some social and economic circles undergoing extensive plastic surgery is actually seen as a badge of honor and symbol that you have excess wealth to spend on a plastic surgeon. If people are no longer willing to pay the prices they once did for plastic surgery then obviously the salary of most plastic surgeons is going to suffer.

With the financial troubles of the United States hitting Wall Street hard it is no surprise that people are cutting back on the luxuries they purchase for themselves, including electicive plastic surgery.  With many NJ plastic surgeon clients working in New York and on Wall Street it means that plastic surgeons in New Jersey are now being affected with less clients coming to see them or more people putting off the surgeries they had planned.

There is some good news, however. With a large number of people from Wall Street looking for jobs, some New York City and New Jersey cosmetic surgeons have actually reported an increase in business because many of those job seekers are striving to look a little younger and more attractive in hope of getting a job. It’s been proven that attractive people are hired more and make more money. Given the almost macho attitude about money found in many Wall Street firms, it isn’t a surprise that just as many job-seeking men are considering plastic surgery as women.

Some plastic surgeons are still doing well and it isn’t as though there are surgeons out on the streets of Newark begging for change.  But many surgeons in New Jersey have seen a decline in business and some are worried that if the economic troubles of New York and other parts of the country continue that it could be a real source of financial stress. New Jersey plastic surgeons also have to contend with the country’s only legal medical service tax in the United States, but if business drops then it might be a catalyst to spur NJ lawmakers to repeal the tax.

Some plastic surgeons offer financing out of their offices, but those offers have become less frequent now that banks are not as willing to loan money. There are still some methods consumers can use to get a plastic surgery loan, though with the credit markets tight some methods might be better than others.  If you need money for a plastic surgery you can often bypass the banks and get a better rate through Lending Club.

Overall most NJ plastic surgeons are still doing well, but the economic instability of the last several weeks and months is beginning to make itself known in unexpected places (such are in a plastic surgeon’s office) and is not just affecting the housing and credit markets.

Breast Augmentation Software Helps Women Accurately Choose Breast Size

On the show The Real Housewives of New Jersey Teresa Guidice visits a plastic surgeon and has a common conversation with her friends that most women have before moving forward with breast augmentation: how big should the new breasts be? In the past, there was sometimes the chance of making a woman’s breasts too large or even too small with the old ways of planning cosmetic breast augmentation surgery. Plastic surgeons are looking to new futuristic technology and instant digital imaging techniques to drastically improve satisfaction for patients who are interested in breast augmentation surgery.

Many breast enlargement surgeries are later reversed because of hasty decision-making regarding breast overall look. Cosmetic enhancement to a woman’s breasts is sometimes a risky operation not because of the cosmetic surgeon’s skills but because of the fantastic goals placed upon the surgeon by an unknowing patient. Choosing the right cup size, circumference and overall shape and feel of new breasts is a usually a difficult decision.

There is brand new virtual breast augmentation software being used by many plastic surgeons in the New York and New Jersey regions today. This cutting-edge program is an affordable imaging solution that cosmetic surgeons can purchase and use for their patients who are serious about breast augmentation surgery. This new technology is available for plastic surgeons who offer breast enhancement and it helps take away a lot of the uncertainty surrounding choosing a breast shape.

There are now several certified New York plastic surgeons who are now using this software. This new software allows for precise measurements and allows the client to see compare exact before and after surgery images before the actual surgery takes place. The remarkable part of this technology is that it uses digital images, not just simple computer graphics. The woman stands in front of a moving digital camera which travels around the woman and takes enough images to build a three dimensional model of the patient’s current body.

Breast enlargement is one of the most common plastic surgical procedures performed each year. As with any plastic surgery, there is always so some doubt and concern on the part of the customer about whether or not the end result will live up to her expectations. With computer technology being used by plastic surgeons to show before and after images on a computer monitor a good portion of that doubt is sure to be alleviated.

The Housewives of New Jersey Visit A Plastic Surgeon

Strangely, both New Jersey and plastic surgeons are suddenly showing up in entertainment news thanks to the reality TV show called Real Housewives of New Jersey.

Teresa Guidice after her breast augmentationThe show airs on the Bravo network and follows the exploits, conversations and misadventures of five overly stereotyped “Jersey Girls” living in the Garden State. New Jersey housewives Teresa Guidice, Jacqueline Laurita, Caroline Manzo, Dina Manzo and Danielle Staub visit restaurants, go on shopping sprees, spend time at the spa and talk a lot about various types of plastic surgery.

The New Jersey housewives infamously call their breasts “bubbies” and they all seem to have a an almost child-like fascination with their own body parts. Jacqueline and Dina admit to having breast enhancement surgery, though Dina indicates that her own ample breasts are plenty real in one episode. Danielle Straub, embroiled in some controversies over her stripper past, has said that she has had no plastic surgery outside of breast augmentation surgery and some Botox treatments.

One New Jersey housewife, Teresa, has relatively small breasts that played heavily into the plot of the show. At one point Dina comments to Teresa “You need bubbies. I love you, but you need them!”

This, of course, leads to Teresa taking Jacqueline, Dina and Caroline to her plastic surgeon consulation where some of the New Jersey housewives admit that their breasts aren’t real. The show’s heavy editing leaves a lot to be desired and it almost makes a joke out of how important any plastic surgery decision is. At one point Teresa appears want to want a B cup but later her husband seems to convince her that a C cup is more preferable. At one point in the show the New Jersey housewives make a comment that they’d prefer a handsome plastic surgeon over an ugly one.

Real Housewives of New Jersey is meant to be entertaining, but it could also give people the wrong idea bout the seriousness of plastic surgery and the importance of finding a certified and experienced plastic surgeon, especially in New Jersey. Plastic surgery is something which must be considered seriously and soberly. Yes, plastic surgery can be exciting and it’s easy to get carried about, but it’s still surgery, it still has risks and it’s still something which should be dealt with in a mature manner and not treated as child’s play.

Watch the TV show and laugh, but don’t follow the New Jersey housewife example. Remember to do your due diligence when it comes to choosing a New Jersey or New York plastic surgeon for your cosmetic surgery needs.

New Jersey Plastic Surgeon Dr. Steven L. Davis Using Botox for Breast Lifts

New Jersey plastic surgeon Dr. Steven Davis is one of the few cosmetic surgeons in the country who is offering Botox injections to lift breasts without the costly expenses and recovery time of breast augmention or breast lift surgery. Dr. Davis is another New Jersey plastic surgeon who is clearly ahead of his time.

Based out of his Cherry Hill, NJ office, Dr. Steven L. Davis is using Botox in a unique way. Botox is normally injected in the face and neck in small doses to smooth out the skin and temporarily remove wrinkles. Botox has been used for years because it relaxes muscles and limits their ability to contract. This helps make wrinkles disappear, if only for a couple months until the next injection.

NJ plastic surgeon Dr. Davis has begun using Botox as a completely non-invasive procedure to help lift a woman”s breast. Dr. Davis is instead injecting Botox into the upper chest muscles of women. NJ plastic surgeon Dr. Davis claims that this relaxes some of the muscles in the chest, which forces the woman to stand and walk with better posture which actually forces the chest out more. The method of using Botox to relax chest muscles works best with women who have smaller breasts, claims Dr. Davis.

Not all plastic surgeons agree that this will actually work. It is a relatively new procedure and there have been no meaningful medical studies of this plastic surgery procedure. Some plastic surgeons claim the amount of Botox needed to really relax the chest muscles which lift the breast would be unsafe, though Dr. Davis is only using a small amount.

Dr. Steven L. Davis received his medical training in the Philadelphia area and had a residency at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ). Plastic Surgeons Using Virtual Breast Augmentation Software

Plastic surgeons are turning to computer technology and new software to drastically improve the results of breast augmentation surgery in New York and New Jersey.

Normally breast augmentation is a bit of a gamble because choose the right cup size, circumference and overall shape and feel of new breasts has been difficult to judge. There was always the chance of making the breasts too large or even too small with the traditional methods of planning cosmetic breast augmentation surgery. Now there is new software being used by plastic surgeons to take the guesswork out of many of their procedures, including breast augmentation.

The new virtual 3D breast augmentation software being used is called Breast Sculptor. It’s a piece of VECTRA imaging software made by Canfield Scientific. It’s an affordable digital imaging solution that many plastic surgeons are using for their clients interested in breast augmentation or reduction. The software is designed so that patients have a more realistic expectation of their plastic surgery and this means happier clients and potentially less malpractice suits against New Jersey plastic surgeons.

The amazing part of this software is that it uses photographs, not just simple graphics. First a photographic three dimensional image is made of the patient using a camera which automatically rotates around the patient, taking in information and building a 3D model on the screen. These images are then saved and your New Jersey plastic surgeon will go to work, showing the patient what different breast sizes will look like. The entire software package is easy and quick to use, so patients can get an idea of what their results may look like in a matter of minutes.

The 3D photographic views are easy to rotate, zoom, tilt and spin. This allows properly trained plastic surgeons to give their patients a full front, side and back view of what they will look like after they have undergone plastic surgery. The software allows for precise measurements and allow the patient to compare side-by-side computer generate images of her breast augmentation before the surgery has been performed!

Breast augmentation is one of the most common cosmetic surgical procedures that NJ plastic surgeons perform each year. As with any plastic surgery, there is always so some doubt and concern on the part of the patient about whether or not the end result will live up to his or her expectations. With computer software like Breast Sculpture being used by plastic surgeons almost all of that doubt and uncertainty disappears!

If you’re interested in this new breast augmentation technology then you should definitely think about looking for a plastic surgeon who uses the Breast Sculptor breast augmentation software by Canfield Scientific.

The Most Difficult Cosmetic Surgery Choice

The most confusing decision you may have to make after you’ve chosen to have cosmetic surgery is who your doctor will be. You’ll probably want to confirm that your doctor belongs to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons or the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. You definitely will want to make sure each doctor you are considering is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. You will want to initially do some research online, looking up each plastic surgeon and checking out his or her website. You may need to secretly find out more about your doctor by thinking about creative ways to learn more about him or her.

After this initial phase of research you’ll come up with a list of five or six cosmetic surgeons who can perform the procedures you want. Call the offices of each plastic surgeon and set up an initial consultation. Most doctors do not charge for this visit. In busy surgeon’s offices it can take a couple months to actually set up an initial appointment, but don’t be discouraged.

At your meeting with your prospective doctor ask plenty of questions and take notes not only on what is said but also on how he or she talks to you. Don’t forget: your relationship with your cosmetic surgeon will be more than just the normal relationship between a doctor and a patient. Your cosmetic surgeon will be responsible for improving your body permanently, so having a healthy relationship built on clear understanding is important.

After all your office visits you should probably have your pick between one or two plastic surgeons who really stood out in your interview process. At this time you may want to consider all the costs, financing options and even what hospital the cosmetic surgeon will be using. Given the choice between two qualified cosmetic surgeons who use different hospitals, you definitely should pick the one with the more professional staff and cleanermore modern facilities.

If you still can’t choose between one or two cosmetic surgeons you will probably want to begin listing the positives and negatives of each and talking them out with friends that you respect. Once you’ve chosen your surgeon and have scheduled the procedure you can sit back and relax, knowing that you’ve made the correct choice by picking the best cosmetic surgeon that fits your needs and wants!

Plastic Surgery Loans and Financing

The services of a good board certified New Jersey plastic surgeon don”t always come cheap, so you may need to consider some sort of plastic surgery financing or cosmetic surgery loan to pay for several expensive procedures. New Jersey has one of the highest cost of living and tax rates in the country, and the prices you pay a plastic surgeon here are sometimes comparable.

There are many different ways of paying for the services provided by a NJ plastic surgeon, from saving up the money in the bank to taking out a home loan to putting all of the surgery costs onto your credit card. There is, however, another plastic surgery refinancing option that many people are not initially aware of.

One of those options is to use the award-winning online loan service, Lending Club. It’s critically acclaimed, free to join and easy to use. You simply sign up, fill out your loan application and when you’re approved other members of site “invest” in your project (don’t worry, all your personal information is still kept private and secure). Soon you’ll have your money at a lower rate than most banks would charge for an unsecured loan. It’s that simple! You can borrow anywhere from $1,000 to $25,000 at a pretty competitive rate, so it pays to get a free sign up with Lending Club today.

Many plastic surgeons actually offer their own form of financing directly through their own offices. You can speak with various plastic surgeons to see if they offer their own financing or if they participate in a payment plan system with a bank or medical loan vendor.

The idea of taking out a loan or moving forward with some sort of plastic surgery financing seems to scare some people, but you have to think of working with a New Jersey plastic surgeon as an investment in your health, both physical and mental as well as an investment in your career, relationships and quality of life. Remember that undergoing cosmetic plastic surgery could increase your salary which means you”ll make more money and be able to pay off that medical loan, plastic surgery loan or other form of financing you used.

While the costs of cosmetic surgery performed by many New Jersey plastic surgeons is cheaper than their counterparts in larger cities, there is still that New Jersey plastic surgery tax which increases the costs by about 6% if it is an elective cosmetic surgery.

Can You Make More Money With Plastic Surgery?

Your plastic surgeon could be more responsible for giving you a big financial raise than your boss can.

Yes, that’s right… even in your job looks do matter. According to a University of Texas study people who are rating better looking by their peers are usually paid more for doing the same job than those people who are rated “average” when it comes to looks. And because elective plastic surgery can definitely make you look better, you could be thanking your plastic surgeon the next time you get a big raise! And as many people in the job market today will tell you: every little bit helps!

Many people who have chosen to receive elective cosmetic surgery report that everything in life is much easier, from dating to success in business to finding that perfect job. Many plastic surgeons use quotes from past patients which make claims about how the services of a plastic surgeon changed his or her life forever. Those these examples are all anecdotal it would appear that there may be a nugget of truth to these stories.

Roosevelt University professor and “lookism” expert Dr. Gordon L. Patzer points out the same things in many of his books. He is the author of The Power and Paradox of Physical Attractiveness and Looks: Why They Matter More Than You Ever Imagined and he is the founder of the Appearance Phenomenon Institute which is dedicating to learning about and increasing awareness of how physical appearance effects our actions and lives. His books examine study after study which show again and again that looks do indeed matter!

Some experts don”t agree that looking good automatically means you’ll make more money. They counter that thinking you look good simply increases your confidence and that helps you succeed more.

These critics of the University of Texas study point to a different reason for the supposed success that comes after working with a plastic surgeon. They argue it”s that confidence boost you get by undergoing and expensive cosmetic surgery that really changes the way you feel about things.

What does all this mean for you?

It’s good news if you are someone who thinks he or she could get ahead by working with a surgeon. Even if you aren’t born with perfect skin or the right kind of nose or have a physical blemish that you feel is holding you back you can get help! Cosmetic and plastic surgeons in New Jersey can now offer procedures and solutions which were not even imaginable ten years ago.

In other words: cosmetic and plastic surgery can be seen as an investment in not only your self-esteem, but your entire career and whole way your approach life!

When you begin looking for a plastic surgeon (especially in New Jersey and New York) you’ll need to keep in mind that though the pricetag on the procedure may be high, you could end up receiving back a hundred times more benefits in the years to come!

Seven Sneaky Ways To Check Out Your Doctor or Plastic Surgeon

You’ve gone through all the steps of finding a plastic surgeon who might be right for you. You’re done to the home stretch, but you’re having a difficult time deciding between one or two surgeons. Perhaps one plastic surgeon is in Newark, NJ and the other is in Princeton, NJ. What do you do? How do you finally choose the right doctor for you?

Here are seven sneaky ways you can get another view of that doctor to make sure you’re going to be in good hands:

1. Use the Internet – You should probably look up your plastic surgeon’s name and practice on Google or another search engine to make sure the practice has good reputation and doesn’t have any skeletons in the closet. When you use an internet search engine you’ll be able to search message boards, websites and all sorts of blogs instantly for your surgeon’s name and practice. If your plastic surgeon is experienced and has a lot of happy clients you will definitely find some testimony and people raving about the services. Likewise, if there are a lot of unhappy people you will probably read about it. There may be a lot of opinions, but try to get the overall fee. If you do find a few issues or complaints then you may want to investigate further or ask your doctor about those complaints directly.

2. Check out the Waiting Room and Offices – You’ll want to keep an eye out around your plastic surgeon’s waiting room and offices. Make sure the offices are clean and kept up well. You might even want to make sure the magazines are new and up to date and appropriate. A cosmetic surgeon may have some plastic surgery magazines, some beauty and health magazines and even a few local magazines available. Remember that a cosmetic surgeon is a business owner and the condition of a business often reveals a lot about how the business is run.

3. Pay attention to Personal Appearance – Not yours… your doctor’s! Your doctor’s personal appearance should be neat and professional, just like any other doctor or professional you’d invite into your home. Your plastic surgeon doesn’t have to look like a Greek god, but he or she should be well-groomed and should be aware that physical beauty is important. Remember, even your plastic surgeon knows that plastic surgery can raise your salary. Just as you would not want to eat food from a restaurant with sloppy and dirty waiters and cooks you would not want to be operated on by someone who cannot take the time to keep up physical appearances.

4. Pay attention to Your Doctor’s Personality – Watch how your plastic surgeon speaks to you, answers your questions and generally treats you. He should treat you professionally and with respect as two business partners should respect each other. If your plastic surgeon or doctor is dismissive of your concerns, don’t ask you many questions or doesn’t treat you well, you should look elsewhere. After all, if your surgeon isn’t listening and respecting your opinion then how you can expect him to change your body the way you want?

5. Treatment of Nursing/Medical Staff - You should expect respect and professional treatment, so the plastic surgeon you choose should treat everyone with that same respect. It is important to keep in mind that this cosmetic surgeon is going to make permanent and life-changing modifications to your body and you want this to be done by someone who honestly wants to make you happy. If the plastic surgeon you’re choosing is just chasing a paycheck, then you won’t be happy with the service.

6. Peek at Your Plastic Surgeon’s Car – If at all possible, check out your plastic surgeon’s car in the parking lot. How do you know which car he or she owns? Talk about cars casually in the interview. Mention that you have to leave because you’re meeting someone at a show room or simply ask if your surgeon could make any personal recommendations. This does two things: it build rapport with your plastic surgeon and it allows you to get an idea of the type of vehicle he or she drives. After speaking with the plastic surgeon look around the parking lot. When you find the car check for a few things. Make sure it is neat and tidy. Is it well-cared for? Remember: this person is going to be cutting you open, so you want someone who is fastidious and orderly in his or her own life!

7. Check out the Hospital - Yes, many hospitals are requiring shorter stays. But there are still plenty of cosmetic surgery procedures that need to performed in a hospital even if they are only outpatient procedures. Your plastic surgeon will have a working relationship with a local hospital. You’ll definitely want to find out which your plastic surgeon works with. You can almost certainly visit the hospital and ask the nursing staff or people working there about your plastic surgeon.

Obviously you may not be able to do all these things to investigate all the plastic surgeons on your cosmetic surgeon list. Using most of these methods will allow you to finally choose the best plastic surgeon that is right for you!

New Jersey Plastic Surgeons Pay Special State Tax

New Jersey Plastic Surgeons Pay Special State Tax

In 2004 NJ plastic surgeons felt they were being penalized unfairly when the state passed a law requiring elective plastic surgery services to be taxed. In no other state will you find people paying a sales tax on the services they receive from their plastic surgeons.

Back in 2004 the law was passed to tax cosmetic and plastic surgery in New Jersey was expected to bring in nearly $26 million in its first year. Due to difficulties with how the law was structured the state of New Jersey was actually only able to collect about $7 million in tax fees on services provided by NJ plastic surgeons.

The bill was signed into law back in June of 2004 by New Jersey Governor John McGreevy. Not all plastic surgery services are taxed. The law states that only “certain cosmetic medical procedures that are directed at improving the patient”s appearance and that do not promote the proper function of the body or prevent or treat illness or disease.”

In other words, an NJ plastic surgeon can improve the shape of your nose to help you breathe better and you will not pay tax on the service. If, however, a New Jersey plastic surgeon performs a breast augmentation for personal reasons then that service would be taxed at a rate of 6%. This means that your New Jersey plastic surgeon has two choices: eat the difference in his or her profits or pass the expenses on to you.

This tax supposedly marked the first time that a tax had been imposed on any surgical procedure in the United States. New Jersey plastic surgeons were obviously not happy about this and many complained that this tax would continue forcing people to go to other states for their medical needs. Many plastic and cosmetic surgeons in New Jersey spoke out in the news media when the tax was first introduced.

Recently one of the sponsors of the original bill tried to get the bill repealed, but the repeal did get the votes needed to pass.  New Jersey plastic surgeons still feel as though they are being singled-out with this unique NJ medical tax.

Plastic Surgery Costs in New Jersey

When you’re looking for a New Jersey plastic surgeon one of the many factors you’ll consider before choosing your surgeon is the cost he or she will charge you. Plastic surgeons charge different fees for different procedures and the price ranges for different cosmetic and plastic surgeries can be quite wide from one plastic surgeon to the next, especially among New Jersey plastic surgeons.

NJ plastic surgeons have a wide range of costs and price lists for plastic surgery procedures because New Jersey is a large state that borders on two large metropolitan cities (New York and Philadelphia), has lots of suburban areas and even wide open natural and farm areas. The prices for plastic surgery varies widely from one part of the state to the next just as the cost of living does. A plastic surgeon in North Jersey who is right outside of New York may have to charge more than a plastic surgeon who is in central New Jersey and has much lower rental fees and employment costs.

Many different services and factors go into what a New Jersey plastic surgeon charges. Remember, the plastic surgeon”s fee is just part of the total price you”ll pay for your plastic surgery procedure. You must also consider the anesthesia fee, hospital usage fee, pre and post op exams, staff fees and number of other items you may not initially think about. Also don”t forget that some plastic surgery items and procedures may be covered by medical insurance while others may not be.

Be careful when comparing prices from one New Jersey plastic surgeon to the next. Some plastic surgeons in New Jersey will include extra services in their price quote that may not be included in the quote of another New Jersey plastic surgeon.

How To Choose A Plastic Surgeon

Once you”ve gone through the steps of finding a New Jersey plastic surgeon, how do you choose which surgeon to ultimately choose for your surgery? Here are the steps I suggest you take for choosing the plastic surgeon that’s right for you:

First, make a list of every certified plastic surgeon in your area who you know is qualified to perform your surgery and comes with some sort of recommendation or reference. No matter how long the plastic surgeon has been practicing in New Jersey you still want to make sure he or she has happy patients. Any NJ plastic surgeon should at least be certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and belong to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons or the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

After you’ve made that list of plastic surgeons you will probably want to schedule appointments to visit the top five or so. Plan this out if you can. You don”t want to be driving up and down the New Jersey parkway all day rushing from one plastic surgeon appointment to another. Try to schedule your appointments with these plastic surgeons by regions such as North Jersey, Central Jersey and South Jersey.

When you meet with each of these plastic surgeons don”t be afraid to take notes about what they say. Notice if they listen to your concerns. Ask yourself if this plastic surgeon is realistic and honest in setting expectations and mentioning plastic surgery side-effects and discomfort. New Jersey is a very litigious state, so does the plastic surgeon list the risks and possible negative outcomes? You can even find out if the surgeon offers any sort of plastic surgery financing. Other than just notes, listen to your gut to see if you really like and trust the surgeon or not.

After your visits with the many plastic surgeons who work in New Jersey you will probably have your list narrowed down to one or two. Now would be the time to really consider the cost of the plastic surgery, remembering that New Jersey plastic surgeons charge tax on certain cosmetic procedures. If you”re an optimist you can probably make the case that the one time cost is not that important due to the fact that using a plastic surgeon could increase your salary.

Once you”ve considered all your options you may even want to discuss all the pros and cons of working with a specific surgeon with a close friend or relative. When you”ve finally made your decision relax and enjoy the process, knowing that New Jersey plastic surgeons are among the best in the world!

Though not a New Jersey plastic surgeon, the untimely death of Martin Kelly one of Britain’s leading plastic surgeons and the husband of actress Natascha McElhone is still a tragedy.

He was 42 and though his death was at first mysterious it has since been ruled as a heart attack from a previously undiagnosed rare heart condition called dilated cardiomyopathy, which causes the walls of the heart to become weak from stretching.

Among British celebrities he was sometimes known as the “King of Rhinoplasty” in celebrity circles because as a plastic surgeon he was an expert in fixing some very famous noses.  He had invented a new form of nose reconstruction and had used his skills to help rebuild the faces of people who had been injured by the Taliban.

You should not simply pick the first NJ Plastic Surgeon you meet and dive into a costly and personal procedure without doing some research.

There are many different ways to find a plastic surgeon in New Jersey or any state but here are a few of the more common ways of putting together your initial list of surgeons:

Ask Medical Professionals about finding a Plastic Surgeon: Whether you’re at the hospital or just visiting your doctor, people in the medical professional stay in communication with each other and often share patients. They can often recommend people from outside their own expertise area. Many doctors around New Jersey will gladly recommend a plastic surgeon they have heard good things about. Maybe someone chose to have rhinoplasty first and then a year later decides she would like to look into breast augmentation. An obvious person to ask about about a referral would be the plastic surgeon who performed her nose job. Sometimes the same practice will have multiple cosmetic surgeons who specialize in different parts of the body.

Ask former Patients about finding a Plastic Surgeon: New Jersey plastic surgeons benefit from having happy clients, so if you know someone who has had a procedure similar to the one you are looking at, ask the person if he or she was happy with his plastic surgeon.

Ask hospitals about finding a Plastic Surgeon: Most New Jersey plastic surgeons work out of local hospitals and most hospitals have a reference telephone number or website you can use to see which plastic surgeons work there. Most hospitals are very strict about making sure the doctors working in them are qualified and competent.

Remember, these methods are simply a good way to initially find a list of qualified plastic surgeons in New Jersey. You’ll still want to work with each doctor before you choose a plastic surgeon.
